FIFA investigation into Spanish FA President’s behaviour after World Cup win

Dublin, Ireland. 25 August 2023 - As the Spanish women’s football team celebrated their World Cup victory, viewers around the world were shocked to see Spanish FA President Luis Rubiales kiss the team captain Jennifer Hermoso on the lips.

FIFA has now opened disciplinary proceedings against Rubiales in response to his inappropriate behaviour, and there are calls for him to resign.

Moira Grassick, COO at Peninsula Ireland says. “When you are in a senior position you are expected to act as a role model for the wider team, meaning your actions are closely scrutinised from all angles.

“Jennifer Hermoso has publicly stated that she ‘did not like’ the unwanted kiss from Luis Rubiales and it’s important that the Spanish FA takes a firm stance on this.
“Unwanted sexual advances cannot be tolerated, and everyone should feel comfortable in their place of work – whether that’s an office or on the world’s biggest stage after winning the World Cup.

“All businesses should have a harassment in the workplace policy outlining what constitutes sexual harassment, as well as the process that will be followed should a complaint or violation of the policy take place.

“Regular training on appropriate conduct should take place across the workforce so everyone is aware of what behaviour is acceptable and what will not be tolerated.

“Support should be provided to any employees who are victims of sexual harassment, including ensuring they do not have to work closely with the person responsible for harassing them. Hold regular 1-2-1 meetings to ensure they have the opportunity to voice concerns or ask for further support.

“This is a unique situation that took place in full view of the world. But not every incident or allegation will be so visible. It’s important for employers to take all allegation and concerns seriously and carry out a full investigation to determine the facts. If you find that something untoward has occurred, you must follow your disciplinary process and put measures in place to ensure that no further harassment is allowed to happen.”
